Tipping customs vary: in the US 15–20% is usual in restaurants, while in much of Europe service is often included and a small round-up is enough.

A quick way to tip

Set the tip with the slider or type it in, and the bill total and each person’s share update at once. The bar shows how much of the total is tip so it is easy to sense whether the amount feels right.

If you like round numbers, switch on rounding. Each person then pays a whole amount, and the real tip percentage is shown.

Tipping around the world

Expectations are not universal. Tipping is a larger part of income in the US than in most European countries, and in some places it is not expected at all. A service charge on the bill often replaces a tip, so look for it before adding more.

If in doubt, check local guidance or ask how the staff are paid.

Splitting evenly

This calculator splits the total equally. If people ordered very different amounts, enter each person’s own bill separately instead of splitting.

A worked example

A restaurant bill comes to 64 and you want to leave 20%. The tip is 12.80 and the total is 76.80. Split between three people that is 25.60 each. Rounding each share up to a whole amount makes it 26 each, a total of 78 and an effective tip of about 21.9%.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal. A 20% tip on 85 is 85 × 0.20 = 17, so the total is 102. A quick shortcut for 10% is to move the decimal point one place to the left.

How much should I tip?

In US restaurants 15–20% is customary, and 18–20% is common for good service. In the UK 10–12.5% is typical when a service charge is not already added. In much of continental Europe, service is included and rounding up the bill is enough. Customs differ by country and venue.

Should I tip on the bill before or after tax?

Etiquette varies. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, which is the cleaner measure of the service. Tipping on the total is also common and simply a little more generous. Enter whichever amount you prefer as the bill.

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. The calculator does this and shows each person’s share and tip.

What does rounding up do?

It rounds each person’s share to the next whole currency unit. That makes payment easier with cash and slightly increases the tip, which the result shows as an effective percentage.
